The hands of the Roman soldier
Were not alone
When they stabbed the spear
Through our Lord's heart?
Could it be
We stood there too,
Party to the deed,
Making sure beyond sure
He was deader than dead?
And could it be
The blood that poured out
Covered the sin of every hand,
And the water likewise
Washed away all our old lives?
