.
When I Was but a Boy
.
Strong
.
When I was but a boy
I used to think
That strong meant
MUSCLES BIG,
But now I know
Its more about
What's inside,
Even if you're
Just a twig.
.
Work
.
When I was but a boy
I used to think
That work meant
Hard and sweaty,
But now I know
It's more about
Whatever you do
To get it done,
Even easy-peasy.
.
Success
.
When I was but a boy
I used to think
That success meant
Claim to fame,
But now I know
It's more about
Meeting goals you set
No matter at all
Who knows your name.
.
Teaching
.
When I was but a boy
I used to think
That teaching meant
There was learning,
But now I know
It's more about
Checking understanding
And just maybe, a
Let's-see-that-again yearning.
.
Death
.
When I was but a boy
I used to think
That death happened when
Your last hair turned gray,
But now I know
It can happen
Even when there's nothin'
On top
To display.
.
How Many Times
.
When I was but a boy
I used to think
When my mom asked
'How many times
Do I have to tell you?'
She wanted me to say
Like on a test; silly me
But now I know
She had the answer key.
.
Jesus Christ
.
When I was but a boy
I used to think
My parents named me
Jesus Christ,
But now I know
I was named for a tree,
As I heard dad often
Refer to me as
That son of a beech.
.
Railroad Tracks
.
When I was but a boy
I used to think
If you drove a car on
Railroad tracks
After a train passed,
The tires would melt,
But now I know
That notion was, well
Quite half-assed.
.
Balloons
.
When I was but a boy
I used to think
If I swallowed balloons,
They'd blow up
Inside me
And make me fat,
But now I know
It takes a lot more
To get like that.
.
Pop
.
When I was but a boy
I used to think
Dangerous soda
Was called 'pop'
And you'd explode,
But now I know
If you drink too much
You will surely feel
Like you've gotta go.
.
Old
.
When I was but a boy
I used to think
Old was anyone
Past 30,
But now past 30,
I now know old
Is anyone
Past 60,
And so on.
