The word of God
came to the courts
of the king in his
winter house,
with fire warming
on an open hearth.
The king began
to read the scrolls,
but then cut them
with a scribal knife
before he could finish
and threw them whole
upon the brazen fire.
Winter house
winter heart,
from this place
none will depart,
But live instead
in the eternal frost
of promise rejected
from the start.
